BOP Hoists
Blowout Preventer Handling Systems with load capacities from 20 t to 200 t

Maximum reliability, safety and robustness – JDN hoists for BOP (Blowout Preventer) from 20 t – 200 t
JDN BOP hoists are engineered for the safe handling of blowout preventers from 20 to 200 tons. With compact designs, explosion-proof drives, and proven offshore resilience, they ensure reliable lifting in the most demanding drilling environments. One BOP system consists of two monorail hoists.
Why Oil & Gas Professionals Trust JDN – Quality Since 1745
J.D. Neuhaus was founded in 1745 in Germany’s industrial heartland, a region shaped by mining and the early days of the industrial revolution. From the very beginning, providing safety meant protecting neighbors and the local community with reliable lifting solutions. This sense of responsibility still drives JDN today: to deliver safe, dependable hoists for the world’s most demanding industries. What started as decades of engineering excellence has grown into centuries of proven reliability – trusted by Oil & Gas professionals offshore and onshore.
Product Overview
Hoists for BOP systems
BOP handling systems are built with multiple JDN hoists combined into 2- or 4-point configurations. The core units – EH Pneumatic, EH Hydraulic, and UH ultra-low hoists – are proven products also used in other heavy-duty applications. For BOP systems, several of these hoists work together to provide the lifting power and redundancy required for safe blowout preventer handling.
EH series pneumatic
The EH monorail hoist series – the reliable solution for demanding applications and for handling loads under the toughest conditions.
EH series hydraulic
The hydraulic monorail hoist – offering quiet, precise operation and designed for use even in explosive environments.
UH series
The UH ultra-flat hoist series – perfect for operations in extremely low spaces without compromising on load capacity.

Central BOP control for multiple hoists – maximum safety and control
The JDN BOP central control enables safe and precise operation of complex BOP hoisting systems, especially in applications involving two or four hoists controlled simultaneously. As a central control unit, it coordinates the operation of all devices in the BOP hoisting system.
Depending on requirements, the hoists can be operated individually or in parallel. This ensures maximum flexibility when lifting and positioning heavy loads, as is typically the case in BOP applications.
A key advantage lies in the safety aspect: Control is performed from a safe distance, ensuring the operator remains outside the danger zone at all times. In combination with the synchronized movement of multiple hoists, this enables controlled, stable, and safe handling—even under demanding operating conditions.
A load cell with a load display can be integrated as an option, enabling continuous monitoring of the actual load in each individual device. This allows for precise tracking at all times of how much load is suspended from each hoist in the BOP lifting system.

Benefits of the JDN BOP hoist central control
- Control of multiple hoists in the BOP hoisting system for stable load handling
- Maximum safety through operation outside the danger zone

Do you have any further questions about Blowout Preventer (BOP) hoists?
A BOP hoist is a heavy-duty lifting device specifically configured for handling blowout preventers on drilling rigs. Blowout preventers are extremely large and heavy safety devices, and their safe handling requires robust, synchronized hoist systems. A BOP handling setup usually consists of two or more hoists working together, providing controlled lifting and positioning for installation, maintenance, or replacement in both offshore and onshore operations.
Blowout preventers are critical safety devices in drilling operations, designed to control well pressure and prevent uncontrolled releases. Due to their extreme size, weight, and complex geometry, they cannot be handled with conventional lifting equipment. Specialized BOP hoists are engineered to provide the stability, redundancy, and precise control required to move these components safely. By using synchronized multi-hoist systems, operators can position a BOP reliably without risk of tipping, swinging, or equipment failure—ensuring maximum safety during installation and maintenance.
Blowout preventers must be lifted and positioned with absolute stability. Using only a single hoist would create an unbalanced load, risking tipping or uncontrolled movement. BOP handling systems therefore use two or more synchronized hoists to distribute the weight evenly and keep the unit upright during lifting. In many cases, four-point systems are applied to provide even greater stability and redundancy. This configuration ensures safe, precise handling of BOPs in critical drilling environments.
A BOP hoist system combines two or more heavy-duty hoists with integrated trolleys on a monorail structure. The hoists operate in synchronization, lifting the blowout preventer vertically while the trolleys allow horizontal movement along the beam. This setup enables the BOP to be safely raised, transported, and positioned with precision. Control options—pneumatic, hydraulic, or radio remote—allow operators to manage lifting and travel from a secure distance, ensuring safe and efficient handling in critical drilling environments.
Unlike standard heavy-duty hoists, BOP hoists are specifically configured for synchronized multi-point lifting and transport of blowout preventers. They incorporate redundant hoist systems to keep the load balanced, overload protection such as Delta-P safety features, and offshore-ready designs with corrosion protection. In addition, ultra-low headroom versions allow safe operation in confined spaces on drilling rigs. These characteristics make BOP hoists uniquely suited for the safety-critical demands of oil and gas applications, where conventional hoists would not meet required standards.
Yes. J.D. Neuhaus supports its BOP hoist systems with a global service and distribution network. Certified partners and service stations across all major oil and gas regions ensure that spare parts are available quickly and reliably. Original JDN components are stocked worldwide, allowing operators to minimize downtime and maintain safe, continuous operation of their BOP handling systems.
