Hoists for maximum safety in nuclear power plants – Successful project at Leibstadt nuclear power plant

The Leibstadt nuclear power plant  is one of Switzerland’s central energy suppliers. It covers around 14 per cent of the country’s electricity requirements. It produces energy for around two million households every day and makes a significant contribution to the independence of the energy supply. It ensures the stability of the Swiss energy system. The power plant aims to supply the country securely until at least 2045. It remains an indispensable partner for the future of Switzerland.

The challenge

In the uncontrolled zone of a nuclear power plant – an area that is outside the direct vicinity of radioactive materials or radiation sources – strict requirements apply to lifting equipment.

Although there is no immediate risk of radiation in these zones, it is nevertheless crucial that the safety and reliability of lifting equipment is guaranteed, as this is the only way to maintain the smooth operation of the entire plant and ensure its long-term reliability. Faults or failures could pose significant safety risks and impair the operation of the nuclear power plant.

The project

Even in the uncontrolled zone of a nuclear power plant, hoists are indispensable for handling heavy loads such as machines, materials or equipment. Their precise and safe operation contributes significantly to the efficiency and safety of the plant.

In order to fulfil the customer’s specific requirements, we implemented the project in close cooperation with the power plant’s mechanical engineering department. We analysed and coordinated not only the technical but also the safety requirements in detail in order to develop tailor-made solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into the existing operating processes and thus ensure both efficiency and safety in the long term.

The solution

Thanks to close cooperation with the customer and careful planning, we installed air-operated hoists from the PROFI product series.

These are specially designed for the demanding conditions of a nuclear power plant and offer lifting capacities of 2 tonnes and 10 tonnes.

The main advantages of these hoists include:

  • Robust, purely mechanical design: Maximum load capacity with minimum maintenance.
  • Durability and resilience: Perfect for continuous operation in extreme conditions.
  • Compliance with the highest safety standards: Reduction of operational risks and guarantee of trouble-free operation.

The precise implementation and integration of the hoists not only ensured efficiency, but also helped to guarantee the safety of all work processes, optimising workflows and minimising potential risks.

Rene Senn, Mechanical Engineering at the power plant, expressed his satisfaction:
‘The solution, which was developed in close collaboration with J.D. Neuhaus, has optimised the power plant’s operating processes in the long term. The customised technology has not only significantly increased the efficiency and safety of the work processes, but also considerably reduced the risk of downtime.’

The PROFI hoists made it possible to realise a reliable and safe solution for the uncontrolled zone of the nuclear power plant. The robust pneumatic hoists ensure smooth operation and minimise risks – a perfect combination of innovation, efficiency and safety.
