FAQs regarding hydraulic chain hoists
A hydraulic chain hoist from J.D. Neuhaus uses pressurized hydraulic oil to power a compact hydraulic motor. The motor converts the oil pressure into rotary motion, which is transmitted through a robust gear system to drive the load chain. As the chain moves, heavy loads can be lifted or lowered with smooth, precise control.
Because the motor and drive are hermetically sealed, the system operates reliably even in harsh or explosive environments. Integrated overload protection ensures that the hoist cannot lift beyond its rated capacity, providing maximum safety and dependable performance in continuous duty.
The maximum lifting height of J.D. Neuhaus hydraulic chain hoists is not technically limited. It can be configured individually to match the requirements of your application.
In practice, the achievable height depends on available installation space and the capacity to accommodate the necessary chain length and chain container. This means even very large lifting heights are possible – provided they are engineered and planned for your specific project.
For each application, JDN experts work with you to define the optimal configuration, ensuring safe and efficient lifting at any required height.
Hydraulic hoists from J.D. Neuhaus are particularly valued where extreme environmental conditions demand maximum reliability. Unlike pneumatic hoists, which are generally limited to a temperature range of –20 °C to +70 °C, hydraulic hoists are engineered for low-temperature operation down to –45 °C. With a built-in pre-heating system and special low-temperature hydraulic oils, they remain fully functional in arctic regions and subsea applications.
Another advantage lies in safety and fire protection: in certain environments, large volumes of compressed air can contribute to fire load or intensify combustion. Hydraulic systems, by contrast, use oil as a pressure medium and therefore avoid this risk, making them a safer choice in some fire-sensitive areas.
Finally, hydraulic hoists integrate seamlessly wherever a hydraulic infrastructure is already in place – such as offshore platforms, shipyards, or heavy industry – while their quiet, sealed drive ensures smooth and reliable performance in confined or sensitive environments.
Yes, hydraulic hoists from J.D. Neuhaus are suitable for ATEX zones and other explosive environments.
Electric hoists are not an option in these areas because the risk of sparking makes them unsafe. Air hoists are a proven alternative, but compressed air has the disadvantage that it can intensify fires by feeding oxygen into the environment.
Hydraulic hoists avoid both problems. They use oil as the pressure medium, which does not promote combustion, and their sealed drive design makes them a safe and reliable solution for lifting in hazardous zones.
J.D. Neuhaus hydraulic chain hoists operate with hydraulic oil as the pressure medium. They require an operating pressure between 130 and 180 bar and an oil flow of roughly 48 to 85 l/min, depending on the model. Standard connections are G 1/2 or G 3/4 with hose dimensions of DN12 or DN16.
J.D. Neuhaus hydraulic chain hoists are designed for minimal maintenance. The sealed hydraulic drive, permanently lubricated gears, and dust-protected bearings reduce wear and service needs to an absolute minimum.
In most cases, regular inspection and proper use of the specified hydraulic oil are sufficient to keep the hoist in reliable operation. For special applications, such as arctic environments, it is important to use the recommended low-temperature hydraulic oils and ensure the pre-heating system is functional.
For long-term performance, JDN provides global service and original spare parts, ensuring your hoist remains safe and reliable throughout its lifecycle.
