JDN UH series ultra-low headroom monorail hoist

What is a low headroom (low profile) hoist and where is it used?

A low headroom hoist is a lifting device designed for areas with very limited installation height. Unlike standard hoists, the hoist body and trolley are arranged in a compact configuration to minimize the required headroom. In ultra-low designs, such as the JDN UH series, the vertical space between the beam and the hook can be reduced to just 230 mm at 6 t capacity, making lifting operations possible where conventional systems would not fit.

These hoists are typically used in industries where space is critical – for example in the oil and gas industry, shipbuilding and marine engine rooms, the chemical and pharma industry, construction sites with structural height restrictions, or production facilities with dense layouts. By combining compact design with pneumatic or hydraulic drives, low headroom hoists provide safe and reliable operation even under demanding industrial conditions.

FAQ Low & Ultra-low headroom hoists and trolleys

Why are integrated hoist and trolley solutions commonly used in confined spaces?

In confined spaces, every millimeter of headroom matters. By integrating the hoist and trolley into a compact design, the overall installation height is reduced to a minimum. This allows loads to be lifted and moved safely even where standard hoist-and-trolley combinations would not fit.

Integrated solutions also simplify installation and ensure smooth interaction between vertical lifting and horizontal travel, making them the preferred choice for areas with strict space limitations.

What is the minimum installation height of a low headroom chain hoist?

The minimum installation height of a low headroom chain hoist depends on the model and capacity. J.D. Neuhaus offers several compact and ultra-low designs that significantly reduce the required headroom compared to standard hoists.

For example, the UH 6 ultra-low monorail hoist with a capacity of 6 t requires only 230 mm of headroom between the beam and the hook. Larger models provide equally optimized configurations, but the exact dimension varies with the load capacity and trolley type.

For specific requirements, it is recommended to contact J.D. Neuhaus directly in order to define the right configuration for your application.

What drive options exist?

Low headroom hoists from J.D. Neuhaus are available with two different drive options. Most models, such as the LMF trolleys and the UH ultra-low hoists, are powered by a pneumatic motor, ensuring spark-free operation and suitability for explosive environments.

For heavy-duty applications with very high loads or where hydraulic power is preferred, the EH monorail hoists are also available in a hydraulic version. This makes it possible to choose between air and hydraulic drives depending on the available energy source and the requirements of the installation.

Can JDN low headroom hoists be used in ATEX zones or explosive environments?

Yes. JDN low headroom hoists are designed for safe use in environments with explosion risk. They are powered exclusively by pneumatic or hydraulic drives, which operate without sparks and are therefore ideally suited for ATEX zones.

Unlike electric hoists, which pose ignition risks, JDN low headroom hoists provide a safe and reliable solution even in industries with strict explosion protection requirements, such as oil & gas, chemicals, mining, or tunneling.

Are JDN products suitable for offshore applications?

Yes. JDN hoists and trolleys are widely used in offshore environments, where compact design and explosion-protected drives are essential. Pneumatic and hydraulic systems operate reliably under extreme conditions such as humidity, salt-laden air, and high corrosion risk.

Depending on the application, different design variants and protective paint systems can be selected to ensure long service life and maximum safety. This makes JDN low headroom hoists a trusted solution for offshore platforms, shipyards, and marine operations.

Are you planning a lifting solution for confined spaces?

Our experts will help you select and integrate the right low headroom hoist – tailored to your installation height, load and environment.
