Paul Wurth relies on JDN solutions for blast furnace maintenance
Paul Wurth is a leading industrial engineering company with deep roots in Luxembourg and over 150 years of experience serving the iron and steel industry. Paul Wurth is at the forefront of innovation and serves as the technology centre for decarbonisation and hydrogen within the SMS group. SMS is a dynamic and international conglomerate recognised worldwide for its future-oriented technologies and services for the metals industry.
The charging platform of a blast furnace poses a particular challenge due to its complex design and the extreme operating conditions. The Paul Wurth BLT© system ensures precise distribution of the raw materials, optimises burden distribution and reduces fuel consumption.
Maintenance and replacement of the distribution chute in the Paul Wurth BLT© system must therefore be carried out precisely and efficiently in order to avoid long downtimes. In addition, electric lifting systems are not always practical due to the varying power supply at blast furnaces. A flexible, compressed air-operated solution was therefore required.
Experience paid off in this project: The quotation phase was completed in a short time and without any detours, as we were able to draw on a tried and tested material base from a previous order for a comparable chain hoist. Many technical details and requirements were therefore already known – additional coordination was hardly necessary.
To clarify the planned solution, a comprehensive ‘lifting plan’ was used, which clearly illustrates the initial situation and makes the planned measures comprehensible.
The efficiency of the approach was also evident in the further course of the project: all processes ran smoothly and delivery took place on schedule. The result: an all-round satisfactory project – to the complete satisfaction of the customer.
J.D. Neuhaus supplied an air-operated chain hoist that is ideally suited for use in the extreme conditions of a blast furnace. The compressed air supply is always available on the charging platform, ensuring that the hoist can be operated independently of the site’s electrical infrastructure. The hoist enables fast and precise movement of the distribution chute, ensuring efficient installation and maintenance. With this solution, a reliable and efficient method of maintenance of the finishing platform could be realised.
