Westcon – Crab crane for processing seafood on board ships
A customer of our Norwegian Preferred Partner Westcon develops and produces stainless steel solutions for the fish and food industry. From product development, production and sales through to after-sales service, our customer offers solutions for processing seafood both on board and on land. But also for lifting and conveying technology as well as freezing solutions, our customer is an excellent contact partner.
Processing seafood on board is always a challenge as space is limited. The existing electrical chain hoist solutions have repeatedly caused problems, especially in long-term use.
The customer therefore needed a new hoist solution that could withstand the continuous load and have a low overall height. In addition, the humidity on board a ship is extremely high due to the seawater and the hoists have to be cleaned thoroughly every day – not easy conditions for a hoist.
At the customer’s request, a tight schedule was specified straight away. The installation on an already completed ship places additional demands on the project management – it should be noted that there is less space available for the installation of the equipment.
In view of the initial situation, close co-operation and communication between all partners is required – a point that was taken on by the experienced JDN project team. Regular communication with the customer and the ship owner was essential, as was appropriate support from our service team during the installation of the system.
A crane system must be installed in the processing area on board the crab crane. Due to the ship motions and acceleration, a crane with a rack and pinion drive and very low headroom is used. In addition, only stainless steel components are used due to the high humidity. The system is also designed for 24/7 operation.
