LGH Ltd. – Installation of a 55-tonne particle accelerator
Lifting Gear Hire (LGH), founded by Bill Parkinson in Manchester in the 1970s, quickly became a major player in the lifting equipment hire industry, serving a range of industries from oil and gas to construction. With international expansion in the 1990s, LGH now operates over 20 locations in the US, nine in the UK and across Europe with a workforce of over 300 employees. Their extensive equipment inventory reflects their commitment to safety and service.
As a rental company for lifting equipment, LGH supplies the gear for the precise placement of heavy loads. One special project was the installation of a 55 tonne particle accelerator (cyclotron).
The massive particle accelerator had to be moved into a specially designed underground bunker at the university hospital in Leuven, Belgium. LGH provided state-of-the-art lifting equipment from JDN to successfully complete this complex and critical job.
The particle accelerator’s weight of 55 tonnes and the difficult-to-access location posed major challenges. It had to be positioned with centimetre precision. To make matters worse, the underground bunker was not easily accessible with a crane.
Four large openings at the top of the bunker created space to lower the particle accelerator in individual parts.
As it had to be lowered with centimetre precision, there was only one solution – the use of the JDN PROFI 100Ti. With the help of the JDN PROFI, which was attached to a lifting frame, the particle accelerator could now be lowered safely and precisely into the bunker in four parts.
