HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT GmbH – Diving bell for the ship Archimedes

HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT GmbH

HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT GmbH offers individualized solutions within the industries of medical and diving technology, civil engineering, tunnel construction as well as for hypobaric high altitude physiology. This case study deals with an example of an application of a diving system. HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT is highly specialized on developing and manufacturing mobile and compact equipment for research platforms, Cran-Berges, pontoons, diving and rescue ships within various climatic environments.

The Project

HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT delivers the diving bell for the ship Archimedes from the water and navigation office Rhein, Duisburg (WSA). The new ship will replace the old one, the Carl Straat which has been operating since 1963 by the WSA-Duisburg-Rhein.

The modern diving bell system has a hoist solution from J.D. Neuhaus integrated which enables the operator of the vessel to navigate the Rhein and its tributaries and makes underwater jobs in a diving bell possible without lowering the water level. The vessel allows the anchoring of tones and buoys in gravel and rock areas as well the collection of samples through drilling or the building inspection of locks. The dutch shipyard “Damen Shipyards” in Gorinchem built the Archimedes and it was delivered to WSA Rhein in Q3 2021.

The Challenge

The design of the diving bell on the Archimedes is one of its kind. In order to guarantee the maximum level of security for operator and divers, shear powers have to be avoided when weaning the diving bell. In addition to that, the diving bell does not offer a lot of space to implement a hoist solution and still ensure impeccable operations including high levels of mobility for the employees. Furthermore, a flawless design as well as the development process have to be reconciled with various parties in order to adhere the date of delivery of the vessel.

The Solution

Within the diving bell itself, the hoists of JDN – PROFI 1TI LMFZ and PROFI 2Ti LMFZ – have been implemented. The LMFZ-chassis in combination with the PROFI-hoist offers extremely little assembly space. Especially the customized solution for the placement of the gear rack drive on top of the beam instead of underneath allows a safer and space-saving moving of waste or tools within the diving bell. The pneumatic drive as well as the materials implemented within all JDN hoists are perfectly suited to high humidity. This proves to be the optimal hoist solution in order to guarantee an interference-free and safe operation on any river in Europe.

The goal-oriented and partner-like cooperation of the HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT team and the JDN team allowed a smooth project progression of the developing process for the diving bell solution.
